Maa Ki Dal



A popular homely and creamy dal curry recipe made with whole kali urad  dal or whole urad  dal. It is a day-to-day curry recipe made especially in the north in North India, served with a choice of flatbread or rice of choice. There is a strong resemblance between Dal Makhani in the recipe, but it has its own unique taste and taste.

The Indian cuisine offering is incomplete without mentioning or highlighting the variety of lentils. Each region, each state and even individual community has its own unique creation and type of dal recipe. One such simple and subtle type of lentil in North India is Maa Dal or Kali Dal, which is known for its rich taste.

First and importantly the cooking time is much shorter than the makhani variance. In dal makhni, it should be cooked slow for a few hours to release the real creamy flavor. Whereas in this recipe, it takes hardly 40-45 minutes and Dal is ready.

Ingredients for Maa Ki Dal


4 Cup black urad dal to soak in water
3 Tsp ghee
1 Bay leaf
1 Tsp cumin seeds
1 Tsp Kasuri Methi
1 Onion , finely chopped
1 Tsp ginger garlic paste
1 Chili , sliced
4 Tsp turmeric
4 Tsp kashmiri red chilli powder
½ Tsp coriander powder
4 Tsp cumin powder
4 Tsp garam masala
1 Tsp salt
2 Tomatoes , finely chopped
4 Cup water
2 Tsp coriander , finely chopped

Method How to Make Maa Ki Dal


First, take 4 cups of black urad dal in a large bowl and soak in enough water for 3 hours.

Drain the water and transfer to a pressure cooker.

Add 3 cups of water and 1 tsp ghee.

Cover and cook for 5 whistles or until the dal is cooked well. Keep aside.

In a large pan, heat 2 tablespoons ghee and add 1 bay leaf, 1 tsp cumin seeds and 1 tsp kasoori methi and fry.

Add 1 onion, 1 tsp ginger garlic paste and 1 chili.

Fry the onion well until golden brown.

Reduce the heat and add ¼ teaspoon turmeric, ¾ teaspoon chilli powder, ½ teaspoon coriander powder, ¼ teaspoon cumin powder, ¼ teaspoon garam masala and 1 teaspoon salt.

On low heat, fry the spices until fragrant.

Also, add 2 tomatoes and fry till the tomatoes become soft and pulpy.

Add the cooked lentils to it and mix well.

In addition, add 1 cup of water or adjusting consistency as desired.

Cover and boil for 10 minutes or until the flavors are absorbed.

Now add 2 tablespoons coriander and mix well.

Finally enjoy the Maa Daal recipe with roti or rice.
